"I've just got my hands on a Newmann Retro mic, as a replacement for my old Rode NTK, and I have to say, it's probably the best all-round vocal mic I've ever used. The warming effect is subtle, the high-end airy without adding sibilance, smooth bass end, and it just sounds... er... right! It responds well to compression, and requires very little in the way of EQ. I kinda bought this mic, 'cause I thought I'd support a British company for a change, but I'm pleased I did. "We have now ready the first songs that were recorded using Newmann Retro. We used the mic for drums ambience, guitar amp ambience and for vocals. I have to say that the results are far better than anything we have recorded before! I did not know that my own voice can sound THAT good... ehh, well let's put it this way, the mic can do nearly miracles to my own voice, especially when close miking You can find two of our songs attached. I think in both songs the overall sound quality is soft and warm, combined with a clear but not too harsh upper range. The difference to what we have recorded with before is clearly audible. "I'm rather impressed. The mic captures a rather airy top end, and a subtle bass. The tube also contributes quite a lot to the character and the harmonics really fill out the top end, especially on guitar. On a Tanglewood acoustic, the resulting sound was almost like a really weighty clean electric when miked quite closely, and had a nice sparkle when miked a bit further away. Picked patterns came through with plenty of definition with fingers or a plectrum.The mic worked worked equally as well on male vocals, sounding clear and natural when solo'd and cutting nicely through an existing mix. The pop shield also worked very well at taming a few plosives. The mic responds well to EQ across a quite a wide range of frequencies. I managed to get some good results on acoustic guitar... I would be interested to hear how it would sound recorded with a matched pair. I'm throughly happy with my purchase, especially for the price." Tristan Jones
